Welcome to the debut edition of Out of the Package, the all-new column by Joe Gardner, in which he will be focusing on the vast array of geek-culture toys. Step into the CBU’s toys aisle and enjoy!
When Professor B [aka CBU editor Brandon Rucker] approached me about writing a toy column, I was somewhat hesitant. I’ve never been big on writing. I can talk your ears off in regards to something I’m fond of and I have TONS of ideas for stories. But when I try to put them to paper (onscreen?), my brain just gums up. And I tend to procrastinate. It’s in my blood. It’s a key component of being a Gardner. Luckily, the Prof informed me that there’s a laid-back, come-as-you-please kind of vibe here at the CBU, so that will work in my favor. So here I am writing a toy column. Nearly a month after being asked. And a full three days after informing the Prof that I was going to start on one.
But first, let me give you a little bit of background on myself. I’m forty-something, I’ve been married for nearly 20 years, and I am father to a wonderfully geeky teenage human daughter and three-year-old canine son. A comic has been in my hands for probably forty plus years and I’ve been collecting toys and other geeky paraphernalia for nearly as long. I may be the resident Aquaman, but Marvel has always been my primary love.
And now to the toys. First off, no toy stays in the package in my house. With the exception being my wife’s first edition Wonder Woman Barbie that I gave her when we were dating, and our daughter’s Eleven Funko POP that has been signed by Eleven herself, Millie Bobby Brown. Hence the title of this column, Out of the Package. And speaking of POPS, that is our current poison of choice. It’s a family affair. We are currently hovering near 200 POPS throughout the house. All out of the package and all on display. So please forgive me if this column gets a little Funko-heavy. I also love Marvel Legends, DC Direct action figures, Quantum Mechanix Q-Pops, and Kotobukiya ArtFX figures
My intent is to highlight new and interesting toys, convention exclusives, and whatever else catches my eye. I’ll share unboxings of subscription boxes (again, mostly all Funko), and my latest finds. My most recent finds being the Star Wars Celebration/Walgreens exclusives of Mace Windu POP and the San Diego Comic-Con/Wal-Mart Exclusive Aquaman with Motherbox POP.
Hmmm, I wonder if I can get Funko to comp me some sub boxes for review?
Thanks for hanging out in the toy aisle with me. Until next time . . .
Gentleman Joe is a geek. ‘Nuff said. Maybe a couple more tidbits? M’kay: his hair growth rivals Wolverine’s. Oh, and he has quite the mancrush on Aquaman.
