Hello Comic & Fantasy Fans! Once again, it is time for geeky thoughts and outrageous statements from yours truly. First though, a tribute to a legend.
I want to say it was 2003 or 2004 at a church at Columbus Circle, NY. It was holding a comic convention in its basement. This was WAY before I created my Uncanny Daryll B. persona or even heard of podcasting. So we’re talking a very insulated, very anti-social Me right then. I was not having a good day to say the least. Rainy day that I didn’t expect, slipped and fell several times and people skills . . . what people skills?
So I felt quite relieved to finally be inside and geeking out. Outside of all the bad, I can tell you of my shining light. There was a little eating area towards the front by the stairs and I got into a conversation about comics history with two older gentlemen. I felt the walls around my confidence fall with all my anger and insecurities break down. I actually was laughing being a fly on the wall for this. I’m certain these two men talked like this all the time, but to me? This was heaven. Lee Weeks and Len Wein carried me that day and I later told Mr. Weeks at a convention years later and said that I would get to Mr. Wein.
Unfortunately, I never got the chance and now he’s gone. So I’m doing it now. Mr. Wein? Thank you for helping me feel comfortable that day. You took this black angry kid and awakened a love of talking comics and fantasy that day. Sure you created/co-created Swamp Thing, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Lucius Fox & Human Target, among others, but I can say that you helped create Daryll B. too! Thank you Sir! To your family, friends & fans: my condolences.

– Ok I’ve gotten through 5 episodes of Marvel’s Spider-Man and … blah. This truly has me feeling like I’m watching the “new” Ben 10. Familiar and dread at the same time ESPECIALLY trying to sound “hip” with the lingo. Stop, please stop!
– On the other side of the spectrum, I’m still loving Justice League Action. They have really gotten all the things that made Batman Brave & The Bold work for me and extended it to the league. The last 3 episodes I saw featured Mister Terrific, Firestorm, Booster Gold, Batman and Superman with his best pal Sid Sharp on Apokolips? (Jon Lovitz brings his wit here.)
– Later this week I’ll have something on the new FOX Sci-fi parody TV series The Orville ready for y’all. Let me just say that I’m more than a little split on it.
– Disney cans director Colin Treverrow from Star Wars Episode IX and brings J.J. Abrams back into the fold to finish what he started with The Force Awakens. Hmmm, time will tell on this move but I can tell you that the fan base was already divided on JJ. So I can’t wait to hear their reactions to this.
Matter of Fact, on Afronerd Radio this past Saturday, the crew + movie expert Sergio Mims of Shadow & Act fame, covered the Star Wars thing before Monday’s announcement, along with thoughts about summer movie box office totals & Fall TV. Check us out here.
Next weekend, we’re angling to have Dark Matter showrunner Joseph Mallozzi on our crazy ‘cast. If it falls through, I’m still on geeky cloud nine that my Dark Matter Top Ten blog drew his attention.
That’s it for now. As I said, I expect to have a review of The Orville for y’all and what the heck! I think I’m ready to dive back into comic books too! So Thanks For Reading!
Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing!
