Episode 1: “Old Wounds”
Seth MacFarlane as Ed Mercer; Adrianne Palicki as Kelly Grayson
Penny Johnson Jerald as Dr. Claire Finn; Scott Grimes as Gordon Malloy
Peter Macon as Bortus; Halston Sage as Alara Kitan
J. Lee as John LaMarr; Mark Jackson as Isaac
The Year is 2047 and Captain Ed Mercer is craving to run his own starship. An opportunity rises but can he handle it? And how will he handle his ex-wife as his XO/First Officer? Well, he doesn’t have time to ponder this as The Orville gets its first mission. A simple delivery…that becomes much more deeper than it seems.
Things Done Right
-McFarlane from day one has stated that this was going to be an homage to Star Trek and yes, it does. We got in episode 1, in no particular order, the warp effect, a holodeck, similar looking sets, uniforms and backgrounds to the beloved show.
-Well if it is going to be an homage to Star Trek, then you best have diversity and yes there is. Aside from Palicki, J. Lee is Helmsman John LaMarr and Hollywood veteran Penny Johnson Jerald is on as Dr. Claire Finn. And in the 1st episode, you get another vet in Brian George along with Christine Corpuz as doctors on the planet The Orville first heads to.
-It was cool seeing Victor Garber as the Admiral.
-I liked the special effects. No. Really. I did.
-Speaking of Palicki, her and McFarlane definitely have comedic chemistry. However, there is a downside to that . . .
Things That Felt Wrong
-The running joke from the first episode (hell, first scene) is that McFarlane and Palicki divorced after he found her cheating on him. However, I got NO sensual sparks from them together to lead me to believe they EVER were together to begin with.
-And unfortunately some of the other jokes I remembered from Family Guy/Cleveland SHow/American Dad. Even though I like their animation, it gets kind of tiring when I’m calling out the punchlines from my couch. It also seemed when I started to get into the plot, a dumb joke took me out of it.
-We get villains in the Krill and they are foes. But no why or methodology. Needed a lil’ something here.
-The show is on FOX and I already said I like the special effects. So that means I’m only expecting one season from it.
I give the opening show a 6.5 out of 10. Plenty of room for growth but will FOX give them the time?
