A TV round-up Folks for the new TV season in terms of Daryll B.’s Universe.
First up, I STILL maintain that The Flash is going too fast. Give Wally West 2-3 episodes being the main hero. Show how the S.T.A.R. Labs group is handling the new status quo and how the loss of Barry Allen affects them all. We got to see effects on Cisco and Iris. That’s it. This premiere was CW Flashpoint storytelling 2.0 and that’s not a good thing. But you disagree with me? Fine. But consider this: Cisco “tricks” a fundamental power of the universe to get Barry back to face a cybernetic samurai android. TOTALLY worth it. . . *sigh*
I will die on the hill that Legends of Tomorrow is still the #1 CW superhero show right now. It is just plain fun. Our Legends are screw-ups but they are totally interdependent. I’m getting that sense of family along with high stakes action here. Throw in Rip’s new direction/organization as a source of friction and an unseen big bad, and count me in every week with my popcorn.
There’s been big blowback on the Rick and Morty season finale and I just have to ask fans: “Why So Mad?” The show is following the formula that they themselves created. I know folks want to see the big confrontation with “Evil Morty” BUT each year there’s only one citadel show and we had it. Let them build up his threat so we can get an epic confrontation. Plus, Keith David kills as The President and his friendship/crush/hate with Rick is intriguing. Relax fans! We getting at least one more year and I don’t want this to be rushed.
A lot of problems with Arrow but I’ll give the writers credit for two scenes in the season premiere. The encounters between Detective Lance and Black Siren are heart-wrenching and “Dark” Dinah is a master manipulator to him. Then the “last” scene between Slade and Ollie, got deep and interesting in a hurry. Two words: Daddy talk.
The new season for South Park has gone from one extreme to the next. From parodying Logic’s “1-800-273-8255” to Columbus Day vs Indigenous People to a prologue to their latest video game. Not all the jokes have hit but there’s no doubt that there isn’t a better satire on cable TV at the moment.
Wow. Just wow. There’s been a bit of hate on this one and I can’t really disagree with most of the down points about the series. Inhumans would have been served better if they went more Star Trek than Game of Thrones. Build me up on the family bonds and inter-dependence than the backstabbing maneuvers. Show me WHY the Royal Family are who they are BEFORE showing me all the problems. The show has made Maximus a cheer-able character rather than despicable. Memo to future showrunners: Not every villain has to be likable/relatable. There is a reason he’s called Maximus The Mad. But I’ll try not to be a downer and give you the three reasons I continue to watch.
1) Despite what I thought of his look in pictures before the premiere, Anson Mount has done a pretty good job as Black Bolt. His facial expressions and actions as a “stranger in a strange land” so far have been pretty on point. He’s the rock that is keeping this boat afloat right now.
2) The Hawaiian characterization has been mint so far. From the band of surfers assisting Gorgon to Black Bolt’s cell mate, they have given some unique performances. Now, will they get lost in the shuffle as more Inhumans journey to their land? And on that note…
3) Kudos to the SPX department on showing off varied power sets across the first 4 episodes. Now not every power can be a winner when it comes to Inhumans of course BUT they have come across my TV/Computer as pretty cool looking.
Now is that enough to cover up the flaws? Nope! But I did say I was going to try and pull out the positives. 4 episodes left to pull this one out Buck . . . Yeah I was laughing as I typed that too.
There’s a lot to be repaired here. Just being honest. C’Mon. Medusa loses her hair to regular $25 hair clippers. The black man (Gorgon) is a soldier with hooves. Crystal is essentially a Kardashian. Not to mention that we haven’t seen Triton and one of my fave sci-fi actresses was wasted in that bit. I’m not going ga-ga here, I just want The Royal Family to raise itself a level.
(And I purposely left off Lockjaw from my list for that’s the one character everyone agrees the show has nailed spot on).
There you go. Pt 1 of my Fall TV Thoughts. Pt 2 I’ll be hitting Star Trek Discovery, The Gifted, Ghosted, The Simpsons and Toonami.
