Another year comes to an end. As the winter chill starts to set in (even here in Florida) I naturally start to look back. This is the time of year for those best (or worst) of lists.
Well me, I like to do things a little different. So sit back and enjoy.
Best Event Award:
To the surprise of no one this will not be going to Secret Empire. Not a chance. Rather it goes to the fan favorite team of Greg Capullo and Scott Snyder. DC’s Metal Event has been wonderful. Pedal to the floor the entire time. It has not only been the main series. The one-shots have been wonderful. Even more so the Gotham Resistance crossover more than held its own. The only question is if they stick the landing in the new year.
Best Surprise Award:
Black Bolt. I wrote about this book earlier in the year. Writer Saladin Ahmed and Artist Christian Ward outdid themselves. I knew of Black Bolt before this book, but I never truly knew him.
‘Bout Damn Time Award:
Marvel Two-in-One was a nice debut just in time for the holidays. Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm. Doctor Doom. Not there yet but it sure looks like the Fantastic Four is getting ready for that long awaited comeback. Took them long enough.
Is it 2018 yet? Award:
Speaking of the Fantastic Four. The Terrifics will debut early in the new year. Writer Jeff Lemire has said the book is inspired by the first family. And with what I have seen teased I, for one, cannot wait.
Yeah, I know he’s a villain Award:
Writers Jeff Lemire and now Donny Cates remind us that you don’t have to be a good guy with Thanos. It has been engaging and suitably cosmic in scope. And if we judge by the latest issue they are not letting up anytime soon.
And finally, the big daddy:
Just take my damn money, again and again Award:
This goes to Tom King and DC Comics. It is not simply the great work he has done on Batman. Seems he tops himself every month. It is not only the incredible job he has done (with Mitch Gerads) on Mister Miracle. The book is ridiculous. You need to check it out. You also have the Batman/Elmer Fudd Special which made us reexamine everything we thought about Mr. Fudd. Oh yeah and check out the DC Holiday Special for an incredible return to Sgt. Rock by King with wonderful art by Francesco Francavilla.
Simply put his name is a guarantee that it is going home with me.
Those are my awards. Hope you liked it. Have a great New Years and I look forward to talking at you again. Soon.
