Titans 19 by Dan Abnett, Paul Pelletier, Andrew Hennessy, Adriano Lucas & Josh Reed – Another day of fallout as the team’s fight with Troia and her forces has brought back the Justice League to confront them. Meanwhile, Arsenal is on his own trying to stop a street gang but this is Titans . . . NOTHING is ever that simple.
Generations: The Iron by Brian Michael Bendis, Marco Rudy, Szymon Kudranski, Nico Leon, Will Sliney, Scott Koblish, Dean White, Paul Mounts & VC’s Clayton Cowles – RiRi’s trip to meet her namesake/mentor post Secret Empire goes just a little bit differently than her fellow young heroes. She gets actually sent to the future to meet the Sorcerer Supreme Tony Stark. Yes. You read that right. Sorcerer Supreme. Can Riri keep her natural curiosity in check around future tech and Tony? Has she EVER kept herself in check around tech? Yep hilarity ensues.
Star Wars 42 by Kieron Gillen, Salvador Larroca, Guru-eFX & VC’s Clayton Cowles – Still reeling from the events of Last issue, Luke rejoins his friends on an impossible mission to take out the world shaper. Unfortunately for them, the people in charge know they are coming and K’Od Chewie already…
Summit 2 by Amy Chu, Jan Duursema, AW’s Deron Bennett & Paul Mounts – So you think you got Val’s powers and psyche down already huh? Yeahhh Amy Chu just did it to my guessing ability again. Grrrr ANYWAY Val has an old friend run tests on her abilities. As this is happening, there’s a little girl further south that needs help….
Superb 6 by David F. Walker, Dr. Sheena Howard, Ray-Anthony Height, Alitha Martinez, Lebeau L Underwood & AW’s Tom Napolitano – Operation Free Our Parents/Family starts and Cosmosis & Anima find themselves facing the forces of Foresight. Meanwhile, someone else is planning to use their actions for their own benefit. Chaotic rumblings reign in this issue that’ll make you wonder what is the bigger picture…
Pacific Rim Aftermath 1 by Cavan Scott, Richard Elson, Guy Major (Story 1); Beni Lobel, Christopher Sotomayor (Story2) & John Roshell of Comicraft – So after the movie, what became of the Jaeger Program and its pilots? This issue begins that tale as we follow the exploits of one dealing with the soldier’s day to day struggle of going on when the fight is over. In the backup story, we get a glimpse of Pentecost’s son and what he has been up to since his father gave his life for the planet.
Astro City 50 by Kurt Busiek, Brent E. Anderson, Alex Ross, Peter Pantazis, John G Roshell & Sarah Jacobs of Comicraft – Comic book creators are a crafty lot. Astro City Fans has been told for months that Busiek was going to harken back to The Nearness of You, a fan favorite story from Astro City 1/2, for an upcoming story. Little did we know he was going to use it as the keystone for a huge storyline. Turns out that the gentleman from that story has created a self help group for other super-powered event survivors. Little does he know, the next event has MAJOR ramifications for him.
Deathstroke Annual by Christopher Priest, Larry Hama, Denys Cowan, Bill Sienkiewicz, Jeromy Cox & Willie Schubert – The collapse of Defiance is just about complete as true natures come to the fore and lies are exposed. A forgotten hero returns “kinda” as another hero doubts everything about their status after a talk. Once again, Priest seeds bloom in unexpected ways and if the last 5 pages don’t evoke emotions from you, then you really hated this book’s direction over the last year.
The Flash Annual by Joshua Williamson, Howard Porter, Christian Duce, Hi-Fi, Carlos M Mangual & Travis Lanham – Speaking of directions, the original Wally West is rudderless and directionless. The ultimate outsider seeking a purpose and emotional touchstone after a MAJOR letdown, he goes to a longtime “friend” for comfort. Bad, BAD idea and unknowingly these events kick off the upcoming “Flash War” as _____________ returns to torment/“help” The Flash.
Silencer 1 by John Romita Jr., Dan Abnett, Dean White, Sandra Hope & Tom Napolitano – Honor has her perfect quiet life with her husband and child. However that is about to change with the arrival of a guest. That guest? Talia Al-Ghul. Seems Honor was an assassin in the League and the news Talia carries means quiet life no more. Strap in for a hell of a ride folks!
Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows 15 by Jody Houser, Nick Roche, Ruth Redmond & VC’s Joe Caramagna – Seems The Lizard needs The Spider Family’s help however Annie doesn’t quite get that. A young hero’s education continues as Spider-Man gives her a couple of lessons while they take on a new threat…. a threat that has ties to other corners of the Marvel Universe.
Avengers 678 by Mark Waid, Al Ewing, Jim Zub, Pepe Larraz, David Curiel & VC’s Cory Petit – One Avenger down at the hands of the super-villain battle for control of Earth. As the teams fight a losing battle vs both the Black Order & Lethal Legion, things are about to get worse. How much worse? Can you say apocalyptic?
Defenders 9 by Brian Michael Bendis, David Marquez, Justin Ponsor & VC’s Cory Petit – The beginning of the end is here as the team squares off vs Diamondback and his hired force. Moonstone. Techno. Titana. Diamondback has prepped for almost every eventuality….almost. In the Bendis style, things get crazier for everyone! In jokes and guest stars abound.
Falcon 4 by Rodney Barnes, Joshua Cassara, Rachelle Rosenberg & VC’s Joe Caramagna – In the physical world, the battle has left Sam catatonic and clinging to life. However his soul is in Mephisto’s realm, fighting for all he’s got. Can Brother Voodoo, Son of Satan & Patriot get him out? I have my misgivings about this book BUT this has been the strongest issue in terms of characterization yet. I feel Barnes finally nailed the new Patriot and is getting there with Sam.
Inhumans: Once & Future Kings 1-5 by Christopher Priest, Phil Noto & VC’s Joe Sabino; Lockjaw Backups by Ryan North, Gustavo Duarte & Sabino – Given how the show was, I was a little apprehensive about picking up this book when first released. I finally broke down and did last week and got a great tale of the Inhuman Royal Family as teens. Priest weaves together threads from Slott’s Mighty Avengers and Kirby’s Thor to give us this mini which is Black Bolt Year One. How will he react to being on Earth with the advent of super-powered beings like him & his fellow Inhumans? And the Lockjaw backup tales are hilarious. Poor Thanos. That all I going to say hahahaha
Moon Girl Devil Dinosaur 27 by Brandon Montclare, Natacha Bustos, Tamra Bonvillain & VC’s Travis Lanham – Real talk moment between Lunella and Ben highlights this issue as Galactus makes moves and the FF robber is revealed. Oh and Doom-Head returns and um… yeah I should probably shush here.
Kino 3 by Joe Casey, Jefte Pali, Chris Sotomayor & Todd Klein – Pieces are slowly put together as a new set of eyes looks into The Event. Meanwhile within the dreamscape/simulation, Kino faces his toughest fight yet vs a pack of Boy Scouts. Yes. You read that right. Boy. Scouts.
Black AF America’s Sweetheart by Kwanza Osajyefo, Tim Smith III,Jennifer Johnson, David Sharpe & Sho Murase – Already have given this book props on top of props on Twitter but for those of you who didn’t see it:
Feb 1st: As you say this, you remember those DC Fans attacking me about the hate for Man of Steel and how if you get the Kents wrong u get Superman wrong? Well I was wrong. The story can actually work. And it did in @BLACKsuprpowrs America’s Sweetheart. Damn @kwanzer proving me wrong!
What am I talking about? Well, say hi to Eli! A 14 year old girl blessed with superpowers, who only wants to help people and make the world a better place. Little does she know she would have to deal with her dad, popularity ratings, government and a foe with closer ties to her that she’d never think possible. Yeah. Now set this in the “BLACK” universe annnnd you have a graphic novel that has everyone who has read it talking.
Whew. In addition to those books I picked up collections of Checkmate by Greg Rucka vol 2, Invincible Compendium vol 1, Black Lightning Vol 2, Black Panther: The Panther’s Path, Avengers The Crossing Hardcover and Avengers The Initiative Complete Collection Vol 1. So I have a lot of reading ahead of me.
Thanks For Reading and I hope a couple of these books pique your interest.
Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing!
