Out of the Package: Wave 12 – I’m Still Here!

| by Joe Gardner – @OutOfThePackage |

Greetings, friends! I know, I know, it’s been over a month since my last offering. February has always been an “off” month for us. It’s like the Monday of the year. Anyway, things are usually tight around the Gardner Household during February, and thusly, I didn’t make any new acquisitions. Pair that with a fairly stressful month at work, and I just couldn’t find the motivation to sit myself at the keyboard and give y’all a new installment. Please forgive me. That isn’t to say February was uneventful. I’ll do my best to recap.

The middle of February, the 17th thru the 20th to be exact, gave us this year’s installment of the New York Toy Fair. I did my best to follow news coming out NY, and fully intended to write a column covering said news, but ultimately felt like I would just be regurgitating other folks’ reporting. I felt a little dismayed at this. This prompted me to more actively pursue my options for attending these events and reporting in person. I’m still working on this, and will likely start local, but hopefully I’ll have something for all of you by the end of this year. Anyway, coming from Toy Fair were some great announcements from Mezco, Funko, Quantum Mechanix, NECA, and more. But my favorite Toy Fair reveal, even more so than all the new One:12 reveals from Mezco, came from Hasbro with their FurReal Friends Interactive Chewbacca. This is something the wifey wants, so I may be reporting on this soon. The video below starts with the Chewbacca and continues with some more Star Wars Toy Fair reveals. Black Series Dengar!!

Just as Toy Fair was beginning, Funko announced that they were ending all their subscriptions boxes. As I’d mentioned in a previous column, I’ve been cooling on the POPS recently, and have been disappointed in the last several boxes I ordered, so this doesn’t disappoint me too terribly. You can read about it on their Marvel Collector Corps blog page, where they also state that the boxes will be transitioning to an exclusive retailer, yet to be revealed. And, of course, the final DC box, Green Lantern, featured a Guy Gardner POP vinyl. And I didn’t get it. Oh well, I’ll be hunting that one on the aftermarket.

Although I failed to bring you a column for February, I did stay active on the various Out Of The Package social media accounts. I shared tidbits that I found interesting as often as I could, and this lead to even more personal interaction with a few of the manufacturers that I follow, specifically Mezco, Quantum Mechanix, and NECA. I am continuing to work on an interview or QA session with someone from any, or all, of these outfits.

My most active day on social media, to date, would have been Friday, March 3rd. This was Bring Your Action Figure To Work Day. Woo boy! I had fun with that one! I decided to take my Mezco One:12 Deadpool and Punisher figures with me. I posted several pictures of their adventures, with hilarious captions. And I managed to not get fired in the process! Check out my Facebook or Instagram accounts for the full captions. This has sparked the thought of creating a running series with these two, The Adventures of Frank N Wade. We’ll see if I go anywhere with this.

Well, there you have it, short and sweet. I promise it won’t take as long for the next one. I hope!

Until next time, you’ll find me in the toy aisle.

Joe Gardner is a geek. ‘Nuff said. Maybe a couple more tidbits? M’kay: his hair growth rivals Wolverine’s. Oh, and he has quite the mancrush on Aquaman.
