Another two weeks of books as I go to get more books!
Destroyer TP by Victor LaValle, Dietrich Smith, Joana LaFuente & Jim Campbell – A book totally recommended by my AfroNerd Radio boss DBurt and I can see why. A modern take on the Frankenstein mythos involving a young black boy. Also government conspiracies, arcane science and just wait until you meet Dr. Baker. End of this one, I’m left craving more.
Ninjak vs Valiant Universe 3 by Aaron/Sean Schoenke, Joe Harris, Andrew Rowe, Eliot Rahal, Joe Bennett, Ulises Arreola, Belardino Brabo & Dave Sharpe – Ninjak lies dead. This story is over…or is it?!?!? Well I did say in previous blogs that the most fearsome words in the Valiant Universe are “Garrison (Bloodshot) has a plan!”. Just wait until you see the latest twist and how exactly Archer and Armstrong stumble into this mess. Ouch!
Secret Weapons Owen’s Story by Eric Heisserer, Raúl Allén & Patricia Martín – Say hello to the psiot conjuror Owen. During the Secret Weapons story, he couldn’t get anything to appear exactly when he needed it BUT is there a method to the madness of Owen’s powers? This is the book series to give your friends that don’t like cape books but want slice of life superpower tales. And why does this revolve around a garage sale? Lunacy.
Puerto Rico Strong from Lion Forge Studios – Comics have a legacy of being socially aware. This project is one to raise money to help restore and rebuild Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. The book is a collection of stories and art styles from mostly Puerto Rican talent span the gamut from the island’s early history to everyday slice of life to tales of the fantastic. My personal highlights include:
- On Traditions & Being Homesick by Jesenia Santana – A dad recounts a bedtime tale to his daughter and her cousin about “Juan Bobo” and it ends up being a light for her as she grows up.
- Of Myth & Monsters by Marco Lopez, Derek Ruiz, Jamie Jones & DC Hopkins – An archeological dig leads to some very unusual interactions between a family and apparitions, Very Jonny Quest/Scooby Doo
- I Dream of Home by Greg Anderson Elysee, Dennis Calero & Taylor Esposito – A woman, her mom and the Goddess Atabey. Just how does that play into the hurricane? That would be telling but I love the subtle connection made here to another event showing we are not all that different.
- Pastitos Grandes by Tristan J. Tarwater & Cynthia Santos – Kids of 2062! Please sit down because your course on the history of Puerto Rico is about to begin…
- And probably my favorite tale from the book: Family by Grant Alter, Manuel Preitano, Andrew Crossley & Jerome Gagnon – Grant tells of meeting his friend Derek in NYC for the first time and his family. Reminds me of various families that I’ve met who took me in like one of their own. So this one hit me right in my heartstrings.
I definitely could go on but go pick it up yourselves. If not for you, do it for the island or a friend or two. They’ll like it.
Justice League 41 by Christopher Priest, Philippe Briones, Jeromy Cox & Willie Schu – The fallen Watchtower has landed in Africa. To be more exact, it has landed in the country of the Red Lion who wants to salvage their advanced tech for his own use. So now along with The Fan and his followers, now the JL lands in the midst of warlords, refugees, child soldiers and international red tape politics. You know the team is not going to come out of this unscathed.
Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows 17 by Jody Houser, Nathan Stockman, Ruth Redmond & VC’s Joe Caramagna – So now two of Annie’s friends have gotten powers through a school “experiment”. What will our young heroine do? And just how close will the fallout of this hit close to home as she “joins” her friends to use their powers to “stop crime”? No good deed goes unpunished remember.
Avengers 685 & 686 by Jim Zub, Mark Waid, Al Ewing, Paco Medina, Juan Vlasco, Jesus Aburtov & VC’s Cory Petit – Wonder Man joins the fray as The Hulk has awakened. However, this version may be like no other that the Marvel Universe has ever faced. Say hello to The Immortal Hulk and cower in fear. Meanwhile, Voyager’s history and motivations are revealed as the “game” comes to an end. However, as with all things involving The Elders of The Universe, there’s strings upon strings upon strings. There’s always a catch…and a price.
Ms. Marvel 28 by G Willow Wilson Nico Leon, Ian Herring & VC’s Joe Caramagna – So where HAS Kamala been? We find out in this issue as she gets “found”. Meanwhile, Team Ms. Marvel enlists the aid of Captain Marvel in their struggle vs The Inventor and his HUGE reptile/amphibian mechs. As a character says in this issue, “This stuff happens in Jersey all the time.”
Star Wars 45 by Kieran Gillen, Salvador Larroca, GURU-eFX & VC’s Clayton Cowles – So The Rebellion is getting desperate to turn their base fortunes around. And their solution, is staring them in the face, thanks to the Empire, they just might have a solution. All they have to do is: start a revolution, break an unscrupulous prisoner out of jail and listen to Han Solo’s plan. Yep. They are SCREWED! But a positive is that I have one of my all time favorite Star Wars characters from Marvel Comics return! (He on the cover too!).
Archie 29 by Mark Waid, Ian Flynn, Audrey Mok, Kelly Fitzpatrick & Jack Morelli – As if the angst wasn’t already at a high pitch, Reggie has a face to face with the Blossom Siblings who in turn have confrontation with their parents!!! ANd Archie loses his guitar just as he has agreed to play at a school function! Oh the drama!!!
Summit 4 by Amy Chu, Jan Duursema, Paul Mounts & Deron Bennett – Mission Kid Rescue is well underway. We get a better understanding of the “ghosts” and how that ties into Summit’s powers. And of course, Lorena shows up and…oh no. THAT would be totally spoiling! *evil laughter*
Superb 8 by Sheena C. Howard, David F. Walker, Ray-Anthony Height, Alitha Martinez, Veronica Gandini, LeBeau L. Underwood & AW’s Tom Napolitano – I told you guys from jump that the character to watch out for here was Abbie and well, she LITERALLY blows the doors off this book as the kids fight for their freedom against their opposites while Foresight watches them all.
Pacific Rim Aftermath 3 by Cavan Scott, Richard Elson, Guy Major (story 1), Beni Lobel, Christopher Sotomayor, David Keith Riddick (story 2), John Roshell, Jimmy Betancourt & Sarah Jacobs of Comicraft – Another I told you so from yours truly as this issue foreshadows the movie in a BIG way. Broken Jaegers. Even more broken pilots. And a kaiju underground that will do anything to get what they want. In story two, we finally get to Young Pentacost’s motivations and desires.
Silencer 3 by Dan Abnett, John Romita Jr., Dean White, Arif Prianto, Sandra Hope & Tom Napolitano – Stuck in a confined space with a load of killers that want her dead, we finally see why Silencer is feared. The main force behind the kill order is revealed and as if that killing field isn’t enough, one of DC’s famous killers enters the fray!
Terrifics 2 by Jeff Lemire, Ivan Reis, José Luís, Marcelo Maiolo, Vicente Cifuentes, Jordi Tarragona & Tom Napolitano – Spotlight on the future Phantom Girl as we discover how Tinya got stuck in the Dark Multiverse. As that goes on, Mr. Terrific makes a decision that will forever bind the 4 heroes. And um, what is up with that Tom Strong warning?
Battlestar Galactica vs Battlestar Galactica 3 by Peter David, Johnny Desjardins, Mohan & Taylor Esposito – Never ever doubt that Mr. David is a fan of the science fiction genre. He goes places here that will have Galactica fans old and new go “W.T.F!!!!???”. As the two crews intermingle, you know there’s going to be trouble but it is the visitor that BSG New Baltar has in the brig that will have dire tidings for EVERYONE!
Black Panther 171 by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Leonard Kirk, Laura Martin & VC’s Joe Sabino – Black Panther vs Klaw! The Dora Mijire vs everyone! Okoye goes into the astral plane to find out answers. War bring out the inner hero and tragedy within everyone…but it is the last page reveal of the antagonist that will either have the reader go “whoa!” or throw down the book in angst. Yes. Coates went deep for this one.
Champions 18 by Mark Waid, Humberto Ramos, Edgar Delgado, Victor Olazaba & VC’s Clayton Cowles – So where do the Champions go from here? A Viv lies prone at the hands of Viv. Wait. What? Yeah you read that right. WHat is Pappy Vision going to do? As this is going on, the new team starts to bond as a member decides it is time to go. This is the farewell issue for Waid and Ramos and all I can say is thank you Sirs!
Moon Girl 29 by Brandon Montclare, Natacha Bustos, Tamra Bonvillain & VC’s Travis Lanham – Lunella has come to a decision. The undoing of reality is upon our heroes and she has to confront Galactus. Yeah. This is going to be easy. In other news, Ben and Johnny are adamant that they are going to need all the help they can get and an old friend returns.
Abbott 3 by Saladin Ahmed, Sami Kivelä, Jason Wordie & Jim Campbell – Being chased by an undead centaur isn’t enough of a buzzkill? How about meeting with your ex to try and make heads or tails of the situation? And if that chaos isn’t enough, our hero finally meets the mastermind of the demonic troubles and, well, this doesn’t go well.
Incidentals 7 by Joe Casey, Will Rosado, Snakebite Cortez, Saida Temofonte & Ramón Govea – The rescue mission has left scars on one of the members of the team that may never heal. The recruitment of another character may have found paydirt and the nature of the powers have VERY close links to another book in the Catalyst Prime line. I think the story is now going balls to the wall people!
Bruce Lee The Walk of The Dragon by Nicole Dubuc, Brandon McKinney, Zac Atkinson & Troy Peteri of A Larger World Studios – Bruce goes out for a walk. How much trouble could he possibly get into? Well try a purse snatcher, kung fu exhibition, an old “enemy” and a midtown bus. Have I mentioned how much madcap fun this comics return of the legend has been?
*Whew!* I’m caught up. Thanks For Reading! Annnnd just as I saw daylight, my LCS owner has dropped another 18-book stack in front of me. *Sigh*
Until Next Time Everyone, Keep Fantasizing!
